Neuropsychological assessment involves objective, standardized, paper and pencil testing of various cognitive abilities including overall intelligence, attention, mental speed, language, visual perceptual/spatial skills, motor dexterity, problem-solving skills, learning and memory, and academic achievement, as well as measurement of psychological symptoms. Many cognitive abilities are associated with specific brain areas, and discrete patterns of cognitive deficit can indicate which areas of the brain may be dysfunctional.
